A vanilla bean is the seed pod of the Vanilla planifolia orchid, fermented and dried for months; vanillin gives most of its aroma. Real vanilla is expensive, and most "vanillin" on sale is synthetic. Only small early studies suggest vanilla scent reduces anxiety; health uses are unproven.
