## At a glance

Moringa is a tree native to India and Pakistan whose leaves are eaten as vegetables or dried powder. The leaves contain nutrients, and some clinical studies report increased breast milk output. Findings for blood glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure are inconsistent. Medicinal supplements require extra caution in pregnancy and careful product quality checks.

**Parts used:** leaves

**Key constituents:** Flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol), Phenolic acids, Glucosinolates (glucomoringin)

Sources and research limitations appear below. The existence of a source does not mean every use has been clinically verified.

## What is it used for?

- T Traditional use

Moringa leaves are traditionally eaten as food and contain protein, fiber and various minerals. This is nutritional composition information, not clinical evidence for a specific disease. \[2\] \[7\] \[1\]

- B Limited clinical evidence

Small studies and a 2026 meta-analysis of moringa leaf-based preparations in nursing mothers reported increased milk output. Most studies were short, while long-term infant safety and a standard dose remain uncertain. \[5\] \[6\]

- B Limited clinical evidence

Some clinical studies reported lower glucose and blood pressure readings, but a 2025 meta-analysis restricted to randomized trials found no consistent benefit. Effects on cholesterol and weight are not established. \[4\] \[3\]

## How is it used?

### Food

Fresh leaves are eaten cooked, while food-grade dried leaf powder can be mixed into foods or drinks when obtained from a traceable source. This record does not apply to roots, bark, seeds or concentrated extracts. No universal clinical dose has been established.

\[7\] \[2\] \[8\]

## Safety & interactions

- Avoid moringa supplements for medicinal purposes during pregnancy. Preclinical reproductive findings and inadequate human safety data do not justify use beyond ordinary food intake.
- Breastfeeding advice is conflicting: LactMed reports no serious short-term problems in studies, while MSKCC advises avoiding supplements. Discuss use with a clinician or lactation specialist; long-term infant safety is uncertain.
- A safe medicinal dose for concentrated leaf powders or capsules has not been established in children.
- Some moringa leaf powder products were recalled for Salmonella contamination during 2025–2026. This does not imply every product is contaminated; avoid recalled batches and choose traceable, tested products.
- Rare case reports describe anaphylaxis and Stevens–Johnson syndrome. Seek emergency care for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, blistering rash or fever.
- People at increased risk of blood clots and those taking glucose-lowering or other regular medications should seek professional advice before supplements; human interaction data are limited.

\[7\] \[6\] \[8\] \[9\] \[5\]

### Drug interactions

| Medicine / substance | Effect | Severity |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Diabetes medications (especially sitagliptin) | An animal study reported reduced glucose-lowering effects of sitagliptin; other preclinical studies suggest possible glucose effects. The direction and clinical importance in humans are unknown. Do not change prescriptions yourself. [7] [3] | Moderate |
| Medications metabolized through CYP3A4 | Preclinical research reports CYP3A4 inhibition and altered rifampin exposure; no clinical interaction has been established in humans. Seek a review particularly for drugs with a narrow therapeutic range. [7] | Moderate |
| Blood-pressure-lowering medications | Some small clinical studies reported lower blood pressure with moringa, but additive effects with prescription drugs have not been demonstrated. Discuss blood pressure monitoring if using supplements. [7] [4] | Minor |

### Side effects

- Mild nausea and gastrointestinal complaints have been reported in some small, short-term studies.
- Rare case reports include anaphylaxis, severe blistering rash (Stevens–Johnson syndrome) and other skin reactions; their frequency is unknown.
- Salmonella illness has occurred from contaminated leaf powder; this is a product contamination hazard rather than a direct pharmacological effect of the plant.

#### ⚕ When to see a doctor

- If high fever, shortness of breath or purulent/bloody phlegm develops
- If symptoms do not improve within 1–2 weeks or worsen
- If severe abdominal pain, jaundice, rash or allergic reaction occurs

## Did you know?

An analysis of dried moringa leaves from different growing areas found roughly 23–29% protein by dry weight; this percentage describes the powder, not a serving. \[2\]

## Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of moringa?

The leaves supply nutrients when eaten as food. Evidence for supporting milk output is limited but promising, while cardiometabolic findings are inconsistent.

Does moringa lower blood sugar?

Some studies found reductions, but a 2025 meta-analysis limited to randomized trials did not find consistent effects. It should not replace diabetes medication.

Can moringa increase breast milk supply?

A 2026 meta-analysis of 14 studies reported increased milk output. Long-term infant safety and a reliable standard dose remain unknown; lactation care should come first.

Is moringa safe during pregnancy?

Medicinal moringa powder and supplements are not recommended during pregnancy. Safety findings about leaves cannot be extended to roots or concentrated extracts.

How is moringa powder used?

Food-grade dried leaf powder may be added to food or drinks. There is no verified universal medicinal dosage; check traceability and product hygiene.

Does moringa help with weight loss?

Consistent, reliable clinical evidence for weight reduction is lacking. Supplements should not be assumed to be an effective or low-risk weight-loss method.

Are there risks from moringa powder?

Potential concerns include allergies, possible interactions and microbial contamination. The FDA reported Salmonella outbreaks and recalls involving certain moringa leaf products in 2026.
