## What is it used for?

- B Limited clinical evidence

Results on cardiovascular effects conflict. A 2025 meta-analysis of 10 randomized trials in 666 adults found that chokeberry juice, powder or extract did not significantly change blood pressure, blood lipids, blood sugar or weight, with very low certainty of evidence. A 2020 meta-analysis of 7 trials, with a supplier among the authors, reported lower systolic blood pressure and total cholesterol. \[1\] \[2\]

## How is it used?

### Food

The fruit, juice or dried berries are eaten as food. Studies used very different amounts, from 90 mg capsules to 300 ml of juice a day; there is no verified dose.

\[1\]

## Safety & interactions

- There are no safety data for supplements or extracts in pregnancy, breastfeeding or children; do not exceed food amounts.
- Do not replace blood pressure or cholesterol medicine with chokeberry; its effect is not proven.
- If you take a supplement and regular medicines, tell your doctor or pharmacist.
- Juice products may contain added sugar; check the label.

\[1\]

### Drug interactions

No recorded interactions

### Side effects

- Information on side effects in clinical trials is limited

#### ⚕ When to see a doctor

- If high fever, shortness of breath or purulent/bloody phlegm develops
- If symptoms do not improve within 1–2 weeks or worsen
- If severe abdominal pain, jaundice, rash or allergic reaction occurs

## Frequently asked questions

Does chokeberry lower blood pressure?

A newer, more rigorous meta-analysis found no significant drop in blood pressure. Products with more than 50 mg of anthocyanins a day showed a signal for lower systolic pressure, but this finding has very low certainty.

Does chokeberry lower cholesterol?

In the overall analysis, cholesterol values did not change significantly. A drop was seen only in a subgroup whose cholesterol was already normal, and this finding is also low certainty.

Does chokeberry lower blood sugar?

Fasting blood sugar did not change significantly in the meta-analysis. There is no evidence to recommend it for diabetes.

Can I eat chokeberry while pregnant?

The fruit is eaten as food; there are no safety data for supplements and extracts in pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Is chokeberry the same as elderberry?

No. Chokeberry is Aronia melanocarpa and elderberry is Sambucus nigra. Both are dark, anthocyanin-rich berries, but they are different plants.
