## At a glance

Buckthorn "seeds" are the ripe fruits of Rhamnus, containing the same anthraquinone stimulant laxatives as senna and frangula bark. They are traditionally used for constipation and can act harshly. There are no clinical studies, and long-term use of this laxative group causes loss of water and potassium.

**Parts used:** fruits

**Key constituents:** Anthraquinone Glycosides (Emodin, Frangulin)

## Frequently asked questions

Does buckthorn help weight loss?

No. Using laxatives to lose weight is dangerous; the weight lost is water, and potassium loss can upset heart rhythm.

How long can buckthorn be used?

At most 1 week and only when needed. If you need a laxative daily, the cause should be investigated.

Is buckthorn the same as senna?

They are different plants but contain similar anthraquinones, so their effects and risks are similar.
