## At a glance

Anemones (Anemone species) belong to the buttercup family. Ranunculin in the fresh plant turns into irritant protoanemonin when crushed, so the fresh plant is poisonous to skin and mucous membranes. Blue anemone extracts are marketed in some cosmetics as "natural botox", but no independent clinical study shows this effect. It is not taken by mouth.

**Parts used:** flowers

**Key constituents:** Ranunculin -> Protoanemonin (fresh plant), Anemonin (dried plant)
