# Ashwagandha or Rhodiola?

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) are common in stress and fatigue supplements. Their evidence and safety warnings differ. The table is built from the sourced cards of both herbs.

| Aspect | Ashwagandha Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal | Rhodiola Rhodiola rosea |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Strongest evidence | B Limited clinical evidence | T Traditional use |
| Needs | Sleep, Stress & Mood, Men’s Health | Energy & Focus |

## Which one, when?

### Ashwagandha

Some standardised root extracts have been linked to small improvements in perceived stress and sleep measures with short-term use; results cannot be generalised across products. Not for people with liver, thyroid or autoimmune disease.

### Rhodiola

Traditionally used as a dry extract for stress symptoms such as fatigue and exhaustion; a review reported inconsistent results and low study quality. See a doctor if there is no improvement within 2 weeks.

## Good to know

- Rare cases of serious liver injury have been reported with ashwagandha; stop it if jaundice, dark urine or marked weakness occurs.
- Ashwagandha may interact with thyroid hormones, sedatives and medicines for diabetes, blood pressure or immunosuppression.
- Neither is recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding; rhodiola is not recommended under 18, ashwagandha not for children.
